The Chair of Pleasure: face to face with legs raised to the shoulder
The Chair of Pleasure is a face-to-face position with the legs raised. The receiving partner lies on their back with the pelvis slightly lifted and both legs held together and straight up, resting against the shoulder of the penetrating partner, who kneels and leans forward over their chest. It allows deep vaginal or anal penetration, the partner on top sets the pace, and you can hug and kiss throughout.

Anatomy and biomechanics
The receiving partner lies on their back on the bed, shoulders and back supported, and raises both legs together and straight towards the ceiling, so the body forms an L like a deckchair and the pelvis lifts slightly. The penetrating partner kneels between the receiver’s buttocks, knees and insteps on the mattress, and leans the torso forward until the chest rests partly on the receiver’s chest, with the receiver’s legs passing alongside one shoulder. The receiver wraps the arms around the partner’s neck and back. The partner on top controls rhythm and depth with the hips; the receiver, folded underneath, can barely move. The hips are strongly flexed, so it requires flexible hamstrings and puts some of the top partner’s weight onto the receiver’s folded body.
Why this position works
It combines two things that rarely go together: deep penetration and full face-to-face closeness. The partners can look at each other, kiss and hold each other while the partner on top leads the movement, and some people enjoy the feeling of being wrapped up and held still. With the legs together the fit can feel tighter. Depth can be pleasant for some and uncomfortable for others, so the sensations vary from person to person.
Variations of this position
Variation 1: pillow under the pelvis
A firm pillow under the receiver’s buttocks raises the pelvis and makes the position easier to hold.
With the pelvis raised on a pillow, the receiver’s lower back is supported and the legs need less effort to stay up. The penetrating partner can kneel more upright and lean less weight onto the receiver. The angle of penetration changes slightly and depth stays high.
- Place a firm pillow or folded cushion under the receiver’s buttocks.
- The receiver lies back on it and raises both legs together towards the ceiling.
- The penetrating partner kneels close, rests the legs against one shoulder and leans forward.
- Move slowly at first and adjust the pillow height if the lower back feels strained.
Variation 2: knees bent towards the chest
Instead of keeping the legs straight, the receiving partner bends the knees and brings them towards the chest.
Bending the knees removes the stretch on the hamstrings, so it suits people with less flexibility. The receiver’s feet rest against the partner’s chest or shoulder, and the receiver can push gently with them to regulate depth. The fold of the hips stays, and so does some pressure on the abdomen.
- The receiver lies on their back and brings both knees towards the chest, legs together.
- The penetrating partner kneels close and lets the receiver’s feet rest on their chest or shoulder.
- Lean forward only as much as is comfortable for the receiver.
- The receiver can press lightly with the feet to slow down or limit depth.
Variation 3: legs apart on both shoulders
The receiving partner separates the raised legs and rests one on each of the partner’s shoulders.
With one leg on each shoulder, the penetrating partner can lean in between them and bring the face closer to the receiver’s for kissing. The fit feels less tight than with the legs together, and the hips open a little, which some people find easier on the hamstrings.
- Start in the basic position, with the receiver’s legs raised.
- The receiver separates the legs and places one ankle on each of the partner’s shoulders.
- The penetrating partner leans forward between the legs, keeping part of the weight on the hands.
- Move slowly and lower the legs if the hips get tired.
Variation 4: penetrating partner kneeling upright
The penetrating partner straightens up on the knees and holds the receiver’s raised legs against the chest instead of leaning over them.
Kneeling upright takes the partner’s weight off the receiver’s folded body and abdomen. The receiver’s legs rest vertically against the partner’s chest and shoulder, held by the arms. You lose the hug and the kisses but keep eye contact, and the partner on top can control the angle by pulling the legs slightly towards them.
- The receiver lies on their back, close to the partner, with both legs raised together.
- The penetrating partner kneels upright and hugs the receiver’s legs against the chest.
- Hold the legs with your arms and move with the hips, without leaning forward.
- Keep looking at each other and adjust depth to what the receiver asks for.
Variation 5: only one leg raised
The receiving partner raises only one leg against the partner’s shoulder and leaves the other stretched out on the bed.
With one leg down, the hips are much less folded and there is almost no pressure on the abdomen, so it is gentler on the hamstrings and lower back. Penetration is somewhat less deep. The penetrating partner kneels astride the leg on the bed and can lean in to kiss.
- The receiver lies on their back and stretches one leg out on the bed.
- The penetrating partner kneels astride that leg, close to the receiver’s hips.
- The receiver raises the other leg and rests it against the partner’s shoulder.
- Lean forward to kiss, and switch legs if one gets tired.
✓ Tips
- Raise the legs only as far as the hamstrings allow; if they pull, bend the knees slightly.
- The partner on top should keep part of their weight on their own knees and arms and not lean the whole torso onto the receiver’s folded legs and abdomen.
- Penetration is deep: start slowly and shallowly and let the receiver signal how far to go; stop if there is pain deep inside.
- For anal sex, use plenty of lubricant and a condom, prepare slowly and never switch from anal to vaginal without changing the condom.
- A pillow under the receiver’s head and another under the lower back make the position easier to hold.
- If the hips or lower back of the receiver start to hurt, lower the legs and rest.

Frequently asked questions
Do you need to be very flexible?
The receiving partner needs some flexibility in the hamstrings and hips to keep the legs straight up. If not, bending the knees slightly or placing the legs against the chest works just as well.
Who controls the movement?
The partner on top, kneeling, sets the rhythm and depth. The receiver can guide them with the arms around their back and by telling them what feels good.
Is it too deep for some people?
It can be. With the legs raised, penetration goes deep, which some people enjoy and others find uncomfortable. Go slowly and stop if there is pain.
Can it be done with anal sex?
Yes. Use plenty of lubricant and a condom, start very slowly and let the receiving partner set the limits.

G-spot: what the evidence says
“G-spot” is a widely used term for a sensitive area of the anterior vaginal wall. Scientific literature has not established a discrete anatomical structure with an agreed location, size and nature; sensitivity and response can vary between individuals.
